The holiday survival guide for breastfeeding in Europe & your chance to win a Lansinoh Holiday Breastfeeding Kit

Taking your baby on their first holiday can prove stressful enough even without the added worry of breastfeeding whilst you’re away, and research from breastfeeding experts Lansinoh shows that mums can face complications before they even step foot on the plane. However, with careful planning, there are things you can do to ensure every member of the family enjoys time away together.

Many mums do travel with a baby, whether visiting the Eiffel Tower or the Norfolk Broads. After all, the benefits of breastfeeding for both mum and baby make it all worthwhile – boosting baby’s immune system and setting them up for better health well into adult years[1].

But with breastfeeding in public remaining a hot topic in the UK, how do other countries in Europe feel about it?  According to Lisa Craven, Lansinoh’s UK Marketing Manager, a country’s attitude towards breastfeeding in public could influence parents’ decisions on holiday destinations. “If a country welcomes breastfeeding and makes women feel comfortable, then it makes a big difference,” she explains.

Lansinoh’s research revealed the Top 5 Breastfeeding-Friendly Countries in Europe.

No matter where you plan to travel, Lansinoh have pulled together some top travel tips:
Lansinoh’s research revealed the Top 5 Breastfeeding-Friendly Countries in Europe.

  • It’s worth looking at self-catering accommodation for more space and a fridge-freezer to store your expressed breastmilk stash.
  • Prepare for take-off. Try to sit in a window or aisle seat if your baby likes to squirm while breastfeeding.
  • A handy hint to stop babies’ ears getting damaged on the plane is to let them drink during take off and landing[2].
  • Drink plenty of water – you need to drink more when breastfeeding, especially if you add hot weather and travelling into the mix.
  • Pack some nipple cream such as HPA Lanolin – the 10ml tube is great for tight airport liquid restrictions, and you can leave your lip balm at home!
  • Bring a breathable cotton scarf or muslin cloth so you can shield your baby from the heat and cover up if you’re feeling uncomfortable.
  • Bringing a good breast pump is a must, such as the Single Electric Breast Pump from Lansinoh (don’t forget your adaptor!) – partners can share the responsibility of feeding and you’ll reduce your risk of painful complications.
  • Become familiar with the breastfeeding laws at your destination.

“It can really help protect against infections and illnesses for both mother and baby,” Lisa Craven explains. “Sadly, a lot of mums don’t feel confident continuing on holiday. Mums need to be supported and encouraged, not embarrassed and nervous.”

Lansinoh want to support breastfeeding mums on their holidays this summer and are giving away a Holiday Breastfeeding Kit, including a travel-friendly Lansinoh Manual Breast Pump, some handy Lansinoh Breastmilk Storage Bags and Lansinoh Nursing Pads.
