Do the school summer holidays fill you with dread?! At least six long, long weeks to try to fill; keeping the kids entertained, bickering siblings and that longed-for holiday that is never quite as relaxing as planned…well Mojomums, you are not the only ones filled with anxiety at these thoughts…
A study by meditation experts at Anamaya questioned 1,000 UK mums, with children of school age, on their anticipated stress levels throughout the looming school holidays and the impact that this stress has on their everyday lives. Shockingly, the research has even revealed the summer holidays as ‘the most stressful time of year’ – trumping the stress that Christmas brings!
It seems these increased stress levels are causing a real strain on our everyday lives, with almost a quarter of mums admitting to suffering from prolonged anxiety as a result of pressures the school holidays bring. Many also find themselves struggling with a huge financial strain of the holidays as they desperately try to keep their little tykes occupied for the gruelling six weeks…
Maybe you have planned a holiday or a break somewhere, surely a break in routine will help? Well, you’ve got to get there first…!!!
A survey of parents by children’s travel seat company, BubbleBum, reveals that three quarters of parents row and bicker with their partners during long distance car journeys! And (obviously!) the survey also reveals children will ask their parents ‘are we there yet?’ within just 10 minutes of a journey starting. If that wasn’t enough, 57% of respondents said their children ask the dreaded question at least six times during a two-hour car trip – enough to send any parents over the edge…!!!
And if that’s not enough then there’s the pre-holiday packing – I’m sure it will come as no great surprise to know that women do the lion’s share of chores in the run up to a holiday, with many men not even bothering to pack their own suitcase, according to a new YouGov survey! The survey, commissioned by iCarhireinsurance.com, discovered that when holidaying abroad with a partner, over a third of women with children in the household do all the family packing, compared with a measly 6% of men!
Is it any wonder that we don’t look forward to the school summer holidays quite the same way as our children…?!?!
