What they say: An exciting, fast paced spelling game. The game consists of 17 word cards and 67 letter cards, which are placed face down on the table. Players then take it in turns to build words by turning over a word card, starting the sand timer and finding the letter cards to spell out the word before the timer runs out! Try to be quick…when the time runs out, the letters have to be passed on to the next player! The winner is the player who has managed to complete the most words when the pile is used up. Aimed at 5 to 9 year-olds, children who are already reasonably confident at spelling will enjoy racing against the sand timer, whilst those who are a bit younger will soon gain more confidence. New readers will find that the game helps with letter recognition, and may enjoy just picking a word card and finding the correct letters in their own time, without the sand timer and other players.
What we say: “My son has just entered into Year 1 at school and is really starting to come on with his reading and spelling so I was keen to see if this game would help him, or if he were still a little young for the theme…
Up against the timer, he panicked (we had a few tears) so we quickly changed our game to more of a search-and-find game (timer was put back in the box for a later stage). This made for a more enjoyable game (for both of us!).
I’m not sure how many times we will play the game to be honest. Once you have played a few times and your child knows how to spell the words with ease, the only real aim becomes actually finding the letters but for now we will continue to play and build on his spelling and phonics.”
