What they say: Blackwood Forest, a tranquil woodland escape just one hour from London, is the perfect place to get away from it all.
Blackwood Forest’s 60 luxury cabins are deep in a 270 hectare beech forest in the rolling countryside of Hampshire. Our full range of architect-designed cabin accommodation includes the romantic Golden Oak Hideaway and magical Golden Oak Treehouse. When you arrive on-location make your way to the Forest Retreat, where you can shop, eat, drink, meet the team, and book your activities, including Forest Ranger adventures. There is also an exciting children’s play area.
What we say: “I was invited to spend a day at Forest Holidays Blackwood Forest and was keen to take a look around and get a feel for what a holiday here would really be like.
The long drive through the beech forest only made our anticipation grow; my 7 year olds sons were excited to be let loose in the woodland, my husband and I were keen to see the accommodation.
Check-in is usually from 4pm (unless adding on an early check-in option from 2pm) and is at the Forest Retreat at the center of the resort. Along with the main reception, the Forest Retreat is also home to a small shop for picking up essentials (and toys and games for the kids) as well as housing the cafe/restaurant and being the meeting place for any activities.
We were able to look around a 3 bedroomed Silver Birch lodge…
The lodge was only a short walk away from The Forest Retreat and you are able to drive your car all the way to your lodge and park there too.
The lodge was bright and clean and well laid out. Plenty of room for a family or friends.
The 3 bedroom lodge had a one double with ensuite and two twin rooms along with a main bathroom (featuring a bath with overhead shower).
The kitchen and dining area was big enough for eating in and the living area had large windows looking over the forest.
And the best feature; a large hot tub on the decking area in which to relax and enjoy while taking in the peaceful woodland surroundings.
Forest Holidays have recently updated their lodges so they now all have hot tubs; bliss!
Although the lodges were fairly close together, you weren’t particularly overlooked and after all, the main focus is the stunning woodland…
Another bonus is that dogs are welcome at all Forest Holidays locations. Over the half of all lodges are dog-friendly and my, did we see a lot of dogs! Everyone seemed to have a dog with them!
After exploring the lodge and woodland area we set off to meet our Forest Ranger David (click here for a full review). After a couple of busy hours in the beautiful woods, we headed back to the Forest Retreat for a late lunch.
We thought lunch was really good value, offering hearty food throughout the day. You can even order a takeaway for evenings in. My husband and I both had a lasagna with chips and large salad and the boys had a kids burger and kids pasta dish. The food is prepared onsite and Forest Holidays support their local butchers in nearby areas.
Would we return and stay? Yes, we would for a real get-away-from-it-all break. I think a long weekend or mid-week break would be perfect; we especially like the idea of going during the winter-time and hoping for a dusting of snow! The lodges were cosy and offered everything that you would need for a break away from home; the forest is obviously beautiful and offers a real break away from our busy lives; and the hot tub, well, need I say more…!”
