If you go down to the woods today…you might meet a Forest Ranger! Well, if you are staying at a Forest Holidays location you might!

We were invited along to Forest Holidays Blackwood Forest in Hampshire to have a date with their resident Ranger David.

Having worked with conservation groups and as a lifetime Scout, David is an expert of all things wildlife and nature and he soon set my twin sons (age 7) on their first task – mini beast hunting!

The boys quickly set about moving logs, leaves and bracken, looking for any mini-beasts they could on the woodland floor. David gave them small magnifying pots to put any creatures in and then told us many interesting facts about them.

We all enjoyed seeing the creatures up close and personal on a special magnifying gadget that David hooked up to his tablet.

This is not a shell as I first thought, but a woodlice that can curl around itself when it feels threatened.

Dung Beetles – yes, they caused the boys much hysterical giggling when they discovered that they actually live on and eat dung!

Next David showed the boys how to make a fire…

With a few safety tools and equipment, a fire was on its way…

Thrilled to see the fire catching!

And add a little oxygen to keep it burning…! My sons absolutely loved this, especially as David stood back and let them really get involved on their own. And yes, I had my heart in hands as this is never something that I would have let them do at home!

Finally, David taught them how to make a camp. Gathering huge sticks and logs from around the woods, the boys were thoroughly enjoying themselves.

Camp made, insects inspected, fires lit and animals identified – our couple of hours with David the Ranger flew by and I have to say that we all had a really enjoyable time. This activity is not necessarily something I would have booked before, but I definitely would now. We learnt so much and did things that we have never done before.

If you are going to the woods today, then go and meet your Ranger!!!
