Child benefit claimants may need to register for self-assessment tax returns

Due to changes made by the government to child benefit claims for any household with at least one person earning over £50,000, a reminder by ACCA (the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants) has been issued as the deadline for people being required to register and complete self-assessment tax returns is 5 October 2014.

This means there only a few days left to register if your circumstances have changed in the last year.

Chas Roy-Chowdhury, ACCA head of taxation said: “Anyone who has returned to work in the past year following maternity leave may not realise that is they earn more than £50,000 and intend to continue to claim child benefit will have to register for self-assessment.“Equally if you or your partner has received a payrise in the past year that has taken one, or both, of your incomes above £50,000 you will need to register.

The 5 October deadline applies whether you intend to complete your return in paper form, for which the deadline is 31 October or online.”
