Do I love working for myself?
Running a business can be really rewarding and allow you the freedom to gain a valuable work/life balance. Running a business can also be stressful and at times challenging beyond words – this week has been one of those weeks!
So is running your own business worth it? Well I now run two so I’m definitely a glutton for punishment! One is more established with a 7 year trading history and the other, Mojomums, is a baby, just through teething, but growing fast!
I look forward to getting in in the morning and having my cup of tea and knowing that the time I am away from my family I am working for my children’s futures.
When we started the Zebra group we sat in a serviced office with a phone, computer and yellow pages! We called and called until we convinced someone that a brand new company with no customers could be trusted to run their payroll. Getting our first 100 customers was really hard, but once we had a steady client base and our confidence grew in the market and business as well as some good word of mouth referrals, we were able to grow and expand.
For a few years everyone involved in the business did everything, it was a case of having your individual role but pitching in to do whatever was required. Multitasking was definitely the order of the day. I remember going to lunch as a team and diverting our calls to a mobile phone! We have moved 6 times since then and we are on our way back to much larger serviced offices to accommodate our growing team while we find a newer, bigger home we can hopefully buy! The businesses aren’t huge, across the two companies we employ around 25 people and the best news is that I no longer have to personally cold call and we threw out the yellow pages years ago! We still work as a team and we have grown a business that feels like a family. I look forward to getting in in the morning and having my cup of tea and knowing that the time I am at work and away from my family I am working for my children’s futures.
One thing I have done and that I am really proud of is employing a flexible workforce. I put my money where my mouth is when it comes to flexible working and both Mojomums and the Zebra Group are living proof that it works.
So what’s in the pipeline for Mojomums? LOTS! We are really excited about 2013 and while we have taken our time in 2012 to develop our website and put the foundations in place, 2013 will be about fast paced, considered growth. We are going to be bringing our recruitment work-placement and flexible working products to market and building upon the success we have seen in 2012. Our website will undergo phase two in the New Year, so look out for some great changes!
