Summer approaches and out comes the prints – and everyone gasps in fear. “How could I possibly wear that?” “Vertical or horizontal stripes?” “Large polka dots or small?”

Prints are all over the High Street and the catwalks.

Huge floral prints, even 3D blooms.

They’re really pretty and colourful, “but how do I wear them?” I hear you cry. The trick is to never wear a print larger than your palm. It’s all about optical illusions. The more spaced out a print is, the larger you will appear. So always check the space between each flower or dot or palm tree!

Stripes are baffling to most of us. Thin stripes, thick stripes, horizontal or hoops, vertical, it’s difficult to know what suits us best and how to avoid accentuating the areas we don’t want to draw attention to.

Firstly, do not believe the old wives’ tale that is horizontal stripes make you look larger. It absolutely isn’t true and this has been proved scientifically by researchers at York University.

The general rule is that vertical stripes elongate. They can make you appear taller and slimmer. The width and placement of stripes is very important. If you have wide hips, you should avoid wider stripes in that area and opt for a darker thinner stripe.

In the same vein, those of you that have a smaller bust may want to wear a wider stripe on top to give the illusion of a larger bust.

It’s always important when playing with illusion to maintain balance in both your vertical and horizontal proportions. So keep the whole body in mind when using your stripes.

The most important thing to remember is to wear your prints with confidence. Once you’ve mastered that, you can wear them with anything. Mix your colours up, wear clashing prints, whether it be floral with stripes or polka dots with floral prints, you will look sensational if you wear it with confidence.
